When Do You Need Custom Windows?

The most common situations are:

  • Non-standard opening size — your existing frame is wider, taller, or shaped in a way that stock windows cannot fill correctly.
  • Architectural windows — arched tops, trapezoids, circles, octagons, or any geometric shape that requires a custom-manufactured frame.
  • Custom picture windows — large fixed-glass panels for maximizing light and views, built to exact dimensions.
  • Mixed configurations — combining fixed and operable sections, even or uneven splits, or multiple transoms in a single unit.
  • Matching existing windows — replacing one window in a set where all others are non-standard, so the new unit needs to match precisely.
  • New construction or renovation — openings that were built to a specific measurement that no stock product covers.

If your situation fits any of these, a custom window from Vinyl Light is built to your specs rather than adapted from a standard size.

Custom Window Styles We Manufacture

All North American window styles are available in any custom size. Each can be built as a standalone unit or combined with other styles in a single frame configuration.

Casement Windows

Hinged on one side and opening outward, casement windows provide maximum ventilation and a clean sightline. Available in any custom width and height, with a wide range of hardware finishes and glass options.

Picture Windows (Fixed)

Fixed non-operable windows built to any dimension. The best choice for large glass panels, architectural focal points, and spaces where light and views are the priority. Custom picture windows can be built up to 240" wide and 120" tall.

Single and Double Hung Windows

Classic vertical-sliding windows are available in any custom size. Double hung allows both sashes to open for flexible ventilation. A common choice for bedroom replacements and homes with traditional architectural styles.

Sliding Windows

Horizontal-sliding panels that work well in wide, low openings, such as kitchens, living rooms, and spaces where a projecting sash would be impractical. Available as custom sliding windows in two-lite or three-lite configurations.

Custom Window Configurations

One of the most common custom window requests is a combination unit of two or more window styles built into a single frame. This allows homeowners to get exactly the ventilation, light, and proportion they need from one opening.

Configuration Type Description Common Use
Fixed + casement A large fixed panel alongside one or two operable casement sections Living rooms, dining rooms
Fixed + slider Fixed centre panel with sliding sections on either side Wide openings, contemporary homes
Casement + transom Operable casement below a fixed or decorative transom above Entryways, above doors
Picture + awning Large fixed panel with a narrow awning section at the bottom Kitchens, bathrooms
Even or uneven splits Two or more sections divided at any proportion — not just 50/50 Any room, any opening width
Multiple transoms Stacked horizontal divisions above the main window unit Period homes, architectural projects

All combination units are manufactured as a single custom frame, not separate windows pushed together for a cleaner look and better thermal performance.

How Our Custom Windows Are Built

The performance of a custom window depends on the materials inside it. Here is what goes into every window we manufacture at Vinyl Light and why each component matters.

  • Vinyl frame — we use only virgin uPVC — first-use material, never recycled. Pull-truded for best consistency at 1/8" thickness, it is the most durable vinyl profile available and carries a lifetime warranty against warping, peeling, bubbling, and cracking.
  • Glass unit — double or triple-pane insulated glass, standard with hard-coated LoE-272 coating, 99% Argon gas fill, and a continuous warm-edge spacer. Each pane is a minimum of 3mm thick (thicker for large glass). LoE-180, LoE-366, and the latest LoE-i89 coating are available as upgrades.
  • Hardware — stainless steel hinges, heavy-duty oversized operators, and folding handles. All hardware carries a lifetime warranty.
  • Weatherstripping — triple weatherstrip compression system that creates an airtight seal against wind, rain, and cold air infiltration.
  • Brickmould — available in four sizes to suit any wall thickness and exterior cladding type.
  • Jamb extensions — vinyl or finger-jointed primed wood in various sizes. Wood/drywall return is also available for a clean interior finish.
  • Vinyl casing — available in two sizes and two profiles: flat and colonial, perfectly matched to our vinyl jamb extension for a zero-maintenance interior trim solution.

What Affects the Price of a Custom Window?

Custom window pricing is not fixed; several factors determine the final cost, and understanding them helps you plan before the estimate.

  • Style — fixed picture windows are typically the most affordable per unit. Operable styles (casement, awning, hung) incur additional hardware costs. Shaped and architectural windows are the most expensive due to the custom frame manufacturing process.
  • Size — larger windows use more material and heavier glass. Very large glass panels (beyond standard tempered glass sizes) require special fabrication and significantly affect the price.
  • Glass package — double pane with LoE-272 is the standard. Triple pane, upgraded LoE coatings (LoE-366, LoE-i89), laminated glass, and specialty finishes (frosted, tinted, self-cleaning) each add to the cost.
  • Configuration — a single window in one style is the base price. Combined units (fixed + casement, picture + awning) and multiple transoms increase cost accordingly.
  • Colour — white is included at no extra charge. Custom exterior or interior colours and dual-colour combinations are priced as upgrades.
  • Installation complexity — most replacements are straightforward. Certain situations, such as steel or concrete frames, rotted structural areas, and non-standard wall thicknesses, require additional time and increase installation costs.

Frequently Asked Questions About Custom Windows

  • Are custom windows worth it?

Yes — when a standard window does not fit your opening properly, or when you need a specific style or configuration, a custom window is the only option that will perform and look right over the long term. Trying to make a standard window work in a non-standard opening leads to air leaks, poor insulation, and aesthetic problems that are expensive to fix later.

  • Do custom windows cost more than standard windows?

Custom windows typically cost more than off-the-shelf stock products because they are manufactured to your exact specifications rather than mass-produced. However, the difference is often smaller than homeowners expect, especially for simple size variations. Shaped and architectural windows are the most significant price increase. Contact us for a free estimate, and we will give you an accurate comparison for your specific project.

  • Can windows be made to any size?

Yes. Vinyl Light manufactures custom windows from 7.5" × 7.5" up to 240" wide and 120" tall. Shaped windows, arches, circles, trapezoids, and triangles are also available in virtually any dimension. If you have a measurement, we can build to it.

  • What is the lead time for custom windows?

Standard lead time is 2–4 weeks from order confirmation to installation. Rush production (4–5 business days) is available at an additional fee for urgent replacements. Call (647) 557-8817 to check availability for rush orders.

  • Can you match the style of my existing windows?

In most cases, yes. Bring us a photo or the existing window dimensions, and we will match the profile, style, colour, and glass configuration as closely as possible. This is a common request for single-window replacements where the rest of the home has non-standard units.

  • What window styles can be made in custom sizes?

All styles we offer: casement, awning, picture (fixed), single-hung, double-hung, single-slider, double-slider, bay, bow, and shaped architectural windows are available in custom sizes. There is no style limitation on custom sizing.

  • Do you need planning permission to change the window size in Ontario?

In most cases, replacing a window with a new unit of the same size does not require a permit. Enlarging an existing opening or cutting a new one typically requires a building permit from your municipality. If you are unsure about your specific project, we can advise during the free in-home estimate.

  • What is the difference between custom windows and replacement windows?

Replacement windows are standard-size products installed into existing frames. They fit a range of common openings. Custom windows are manufactured to specific dimensions and specifications for a particular opening, style, or architectural application. Every window Vinyl Light produces is custom-made to order; we do not carry window inventory in stock.
